Breed Standards:

  • General appearance
The Sphynx cat's most identifiable characteristic is the appearance of hairlessness.. The Sphynx cat is of medium size. Females are generally smaller than males. The head shape is a modified wedge, with prominent cheekbones and whisker pads giving a squared appearance to the muzzle. The body feels warm and soft to the touch, with a skin texture akin to either a soft peach or a smooth nectarine.
The Sphynx is sweet-tempered, lively, and loves to be cuddled and petted.
Allowable Outcrosses:
Domestic Short Hair and American Short Hair

Grooming and Skin Care:

Care for the appearance of Sphynx is also not very difficult. Like with all cats you should trim nails, clean ears and wipe eyes. One new feature here is that Sphynx sweats. Therefore you should wash him weekly or wipe the skin with a wet towel.

What washing treatments are suitable for Sphynx? Most pet shops carry no-tear pet shampoos, or use a pH-neutral shower gel or baby shampoo.. The most important thing is to wipe and dry the animal thoroughly after bathing in order to prevent overcooling.

Here's a great suggestion from one of our parents:

"Dear Judi,
I wanted to write and tell you how wonderful my little boys are! We're making it wonderfully together, but they still do not fancy bath-time. I finally came up with a way to bathe them that they actually enjoy, and I wanted to share it with you.

I purchased a set of bath mitts (Wal-Mart), then I put one boy at a time up on my bath counter (on a towel). With warm water running slightly I wet my left glove, and soap up my right glove with their pet safe shampoo. The wam water seems to calm them, and adds that "spa" feeling!
Once they're clean, I rinse them with my water-only glove, then wrap them in a towel. I have my skin oil handy to massage into the skin after the bath.

The gloves have made a great difference in the bathing experience, and I thought readers on your website might appreciate knowing how I solved my boys hesitation for their baths!

Sphynx Care:

Sphynx are the most surprising and unordinary cats. It is rare that someone can stay indifferent to these cats after meeting one in person. Although, people may react with shock, a delight, wonder or, alas, an aversion. Many people feel pity looking at the Sphynx: "Poor kitty, it always feels cold".

The fact is that Sphynx feels perfectly fine in most room temperatures. Just bear in mind that if YOU feel cold, more than likely they will too.
Absence of a coat is compensated by a higher body temperature and perfect appetite (Sphynx's eat more than ordinary cats). Feeding Sphynx is simple. You can use dry foods or canned. Otherwise use natural foods: meat, fish, curds, porridges mixed with meat and fish. It is important that all products are fresh and high-quality.

Sphynx possess a very friendly temperament. They are clever, and display a keen interest to everything happening around them. They love to be in the center of all events. But beware... sometimes their love for their human may even grow into a kind of passion! They love to kiss you, and will often jump around your shoulders to give you a Sphynx hug.
Unlike many cats that prefer to allow their human to find them; the Sphynx awaits your presence, and will come to you!
